What it is

GRIFULVIN V® (griseofulvin) microsize is an oral antifungal prescription medication often used to treat tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp). Griseofulvin, the active ingredient in GRIFULVIN V®, is derived from a species of the mold Penicillium and has been used clinically since 1958. It was the first antifungal compound suitable for oral use.
GRIFULVIN V® is available as 500 mg tablets. The tablets offer a systemic treatment in a convenient, once-daily dose.

What GRIFULVIN V® is indicated for

GRIFULVIN V® (griseofulvin) microsize is an oral antifungal prescription medication indicated for treatment of tinea capitis. It has also been approved for the treatment of tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, tinea unguium and tinea barbae.

What it does

Griseofulvin, the active ingredient in GRIFULVIN V®, acts systemically to inhibit the growth of certain specific fungi that commonly cause ringworm infections of the hair, skin and nails. Griseofulvin has been the standard of treatment for treating tinea capitis for nearly 50 years.

Precautions

Griseofulvin may cause photosensitivity. Wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher is advised.

Possible side effects

When side effects occur, they are most commonly of the hypersensitivity type, such as skin rashes and hives. Other side effects reported occasionally are oral thrush, nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, mental confusion and impairment of performance of routine activities.

Contraindications

GRIFULVIN V® is contraindicated in individuals with porphyria (a metabolic disorder), hepatocellular (liver) failure, and in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to griseofulvin. Griseofulvin should not be prescribed to pregnant women.
